Holland comes to Battle

Tulips are traditionally associated with Holland, but originally came from Turkey. Tulip bulbs reached the height of their popularity in the Seventeenth Century where a single bulb could be exchanged for twelve fat English sheep or two hogsheads of wine. Members of the Papendrecht Rotary Club visited Battle for the Battle of Hastings 950th anniversary and very kindly presented Battle Rotarians with boxes of tulip bulbs. The tulips suitably named for Rotary were bred in Holland by a Rotarian. In  their full splendour they are now blooming in the gardens of members of the Rotary Club of Battle.
